Artworks of light on the Zuidertoren

Artworks of light on the Zuidertoren

Artworks of light on the Zuidertoren

Between 1854 and 1910, the Noordertoren (northern tower) and the Zuidertoren (southern tower) together represented the beacons of Schiermonnikoog. As a result of changing techniques (the northern tower was outfitted with a turning light), the southern tower became obsolete by 1910. The organisation of Hi-Lo saw a unique "canvas" for an artform in the beautiful, centrally located tower, one that matched the past of the tower: light art.

The Zuidertoren on Schiermonnikoog will become a canvas every evening from July 1st. Until July 2023 , a programme of light projections will illuminate the tower daily for a limited time. These projections take place during the nautical twilight, after the sun has set.
In the coming year six works of art can be admired in the Zuidertoren. Every two months a new artist is presented. These six artists were selected as a result of their experience, subject matter, and technical innovation. The artist names are Femke Schaap, Jacco Olivier, Jan van Nuenen, Gilleam Trapenberg, Daphne Glasmacher and Jos Agasi.

All works of art at Baken Schiermonnikoog take into account the timing, duration, and intensity of the season and the dark sky status of the island.
Starting times nautical twilight.
